9th Grade Football Opens Season With Sweep of Saginaw

The Burleson High School 9th Grade football teams swept the Saginaw Rough Riders Thursday evening at Saginaw High School. Here’s what happened:

Red Team

The 9th Grade Red Team earned a hard-fought 20-12 victory versus the Riders on the strength of three touchdown receptions. QB Chris Cook threw two of the scores, a 51-yarder to WR Devin Richerson and a 10-yarder to WR Michael Reedy. QB Matt Maynard also hooked up with Reedy on an 8-yarder late in the game that proved to be the game-winner.

The Red Team is 1-0 on the season, and will make its home debut on Thursday, September 7th, in a non-district game against the Joshua Owls. Kickoff is set for 5:30 PM at Burleson Stadium.

 

Black Team

The 9th Grade Black Team shredded the Saginaw defense to the tune of 531 total yards of offense, 444 of them coming on the ground, in a 62-12 win. RB Jarrett Austin had a monster game in his BHS debut, totaling 264 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries. WR Tadarius Calton also had a big night for the Elks, snaring 4 receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

QB Ethan McBrayer turned in a solid game in his first start under center as an Elk, finishing 5-6 passing for 87 yards and two scores; he added an additional 56 yards on the ground on 8 carries.

Running backs Aswan Bonner (9 carries, 41 yards) and Gabe Sanchez (2 carries, 33 yards) added late rushing touchdowns.

The Black Team is 1-0 on the young season, and will look to start a winning streak on Thursday, September 7th, when the Panthers of Fort Worth Paschal come calling. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM at Burleson Stadium.
