9th Grade Football Splits With Weatherford

The Burleson High School 9th Grade football teams went 1-1 against the Weatherford Kangaroos Thursday night at Burleson Stadium. Here’s what happened:

Red Team
The 9th Grade Red Team couldn’t hold a late lead, and dropped its first game of the season by a score of 8-6.

QB Chris Cook scored on a 65-yard run on the Elks’ first offensive play, giving BHS an early 6-0 lead.

The Roos scored the game-tying touchdown with 3:30 left in the 4th quarter, and took the lead on the ensuing 2-point try. The Elk offense went 4-and-out on its next possession, sealing the win for Weatherford.

The Red Team is now 2-1 on the season. After the bye week, the Red Team will begin the District 9-5A portion of its schedule on Thursday, September 28th, against the Pirates of Granbury High School. Kickoff is set for 5:30 PM at Perkins Field in Granbury.

Black Team
The 9th Grade Black Team ran its winning streak to 3 games with a 20-0 win; the shutout was the second in a row for the Black Team defense.

Leading that defense was LB Quentin Husband, who racked up a team-high 7 tackles. CB Chase Walker had his first interception of the season, and FS Nick Cartmill added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Offensively, the Elks were paced by RB Jarrett Austin, who finished with a game-high 187 yards rushing on 18 carries; he also scored a touchdown. QB Ethan McBrayer was sharp all night, completing 10 passes on 12 attempts for 72 yards and touchdown passes to WR Taddarius Calton (4 catches, 35 yards) and TE Quentin Husband (1 catch, 6 yards). WR Chase Walker added 3 catches for 18 yards.

The Black Team is 3-0 on the season. After the bye week, the Elks will face the Granbury Pirates in the District 9-5A opener. The game is scheduled for Thursday, September 28th, at 7:00 PM at Perkins Field in Granbury.
