The BHS 9th Grade Black Team ended their season with a bang Thursday night, dominating the rival Crowley Eagles 67-32 at Eagle Stadium.
The Elks’ offense tore through the Crowley defense at will, with the offense live leading the way. LT Mason Nevling, LG Ryan Patino, C Chandler Poggensee, RG Jared Negrete, and RT Harlan Perkins opened up holes for Elk running backs all night, and gave QB Ethan McBrayer plenty of time to throw.
McBrayer used that time effectively, completing 6 of 8 passes for 163 yards and 4 touchdown passes. Three of the scores went to WR Taddarius Calton (4 catches/142 yards), and the other to TE/ILB Quenton Husband (1 catch/17 yards).
The aforementioned Elk running backs, Jarrett Austin and Gabe Sanchez, found huge holes all night. Austin finished the night with 24 carries for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns; he also scored 4 two-point conversions. Sanchez added 29 yards on 4 carries; he had 2 touchdowns and a two-point conversion. As a team the Elks rushed for 296 yards on 30 carries, good for an average of 9.8 yards an attempt.
Defensively, Husband, DB Aswan Bonner, and DB Chris Pritchett recorded interceptions.
With the win, the Black Team finishes the 2017 campaign with an overall record of 7-3. In District 9-5A play, the team overcame a 1-3 start to finish 4-3, good enough for 3rd place.
