In its third game of the Elk Classic tournament, the Burleson Elks Varsity Baseball team beat the Abilene Cooper Cougars 8-0 Friday afternoon at Elk Field. The game was called after 6 innings due to the tournament’s mercy rule.
Senior pitcher Hayden Alexander continued his stellar start to the 2018 season, as he went the distance against Cooper to earn the first shutout of his career. Alexander (2-0, 1.40 ERA this season), a Dallas Baptist University-signee, allowed just 4 hits in 6 innings, and struck out 11 Cougars.
The Elks’ offense was lead by Seniors Kayden Cassidy (2-3 with a run scored and a double) and Nik Bengochea (2-3 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base) and Sophomore T.J. Pound (3-4 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double).
The Elks finished the weekend with tough losses to Midlothian Heritage (4-3 Final), El Paso Eastlake (10-8 final), and state-ranked Red Oak (11-1 final). Highlights from those games include:
-Sophomore Isaiah Smith pitched 5 strong innings against Heritage, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits; he struck out 3 and walked none, earning a no-decision.
-Sophomore Colton McCallum hit his 1st career home run against Heritage, a solo shot that tied the game in the 3rd inning.
-Sophomore T.J. Pound had a huge game against El Paso Eastlake, finishing 2-3 with a double and 5 RBI.
