Multiple Teams · Frosh Football Sweeps Cleburne

The Burleson High School 9th Grade football teams swept the Cleburne Yellow Jackets Thursday night at Brooks Conover Field in Cleburne. Here’s what happened:

Red Team
The Red Team defeated Cleburne 8-6 thanks to a ball-control offense and a strong 2nd half defensive effort.

The Elks took advantage of great field position early in the 2nd Quarter for their only score of the game. After a short Cleburne punt from its own end zone, BHS took over at the Jacket 16-yard line. Four plays later, QB Chris Cook ran in a 1-yard keeper; Cook then punched in the two-point conversion on another keeper to give the Elks an 8-0 lead. The Elks ran 25 plays in the 1st half, compared to just 11 for the Jackets.

DE Travis Myszweski, DT Nick Jones, and ILBs Chris Savage and Isaiah Claveran led the Elks’ defense, which held CHS to just 3 first downs.

With the win, the Red Team improves to 4-3-1 on the season, and 2-2-1 in District 9-5A play. The Red Team currently does not have a game scheduled for next week, as Arlington Seguin fields only one 9th Grade Team. The BHS coaches are hard at work trying to find an opponent; check back at burlesonathletics.com for updates.

Black Team
The Black Team used a dominant running game to throttle the Yellow Jackets 35-12. RB Gabe Sanchez found running room all night thanks to an outstanding effort from the Elks’ offensive line. Offensive tackles Harlan Perkins and Mason Nevling were especially dominant, each playing his best game of the season. They helped Sanchez score two rushing touchdowns, a 4-yarder and a 2-yarder.

QB Ethan McBrayer also had a big night, throwing 3 touchdown passes. The first one went to TE Quentin Husband for 6 yards; the next two went to WR Taddarius Calton for 4 and 44 yards, respectively.

Kicker Joe Paul Brown had his best game of the season, going 5-5 on extra point attempts and pinning the Jackets deep in their own territory on kickoffs.

With the win, the Black Team improves to 5-3 on the season, and 2-3 in District 9-5A play. The Elks return to action on Thursday, Novemver 2nd, for the final home game of the season. Kickoff is currently set for 7:00 PM at Burleson Stadium, as the Cougars of Arlington Seguin High School come to town.

Multiple Teams · JV Elks Thump Yellowjackets 33-6

The Burleson JV took the win last night against Cleburne, 33-6.  Defensively there were a few standouts as Vernon Bullock intercepted two passes and Jabril Edwards had another.  Jake Britton added a fumble recovery and Chandler Hampton had two pass break ups.

Chandler Hampton wasn’t only a defensive standout, but an offensive one as well.  He scored on the first play of the game with a 32 yard run.  He had a couple of other big runs on the night also.

Nyke Martin had touchdown runs of 15 yards and 1 yard and also threw two touchdowns to Brennan Zeiner, one from 5 yards out and another from 74 yards.

The Elks take on Arlington Seguin next Thursday at Seguin at 6:00 PM.
